Grapes is a cash crop which many Yemeni farmers rely on for income, especially in Sana’a and Sa’adah governorates.
Yemeni grapes have a competitive advantage for its variety, quality, and nutritious value - this is what has made Yemeni grapes world famous. However, increasing fuel prices have left a negative impact on productivity. Farmers can no longer afford the spiraling costs of production, especially the fuel which is needed to pump water for irrigation of vineries.
PWP, through YECRP financed by the World Bank in partnership with UNDP, was motivated to help by implementing projects that serve agriculture – bonds and reservoirs to harvest rainwater. It also implements agricultural protection projects which contribute to the increasing use of flash flood waters by farmers thereby increasing the irrigated areas. These projects have also contributed to the protection of grape vineries from soil erosion and desertification.
