PWP Supports Humanitarian Needs

Over the past six years, PWP has been working to meet the humanitarian needs of Yemenis most affected by the current situation, as well as the poorest groups of society through sustainable projects that are closely linked to their daily lives.
Since the United Nations announced that Yemen is experiencing the world’s worst humanitarian crisis to date, PWP, with support from the donors’ community led by the World Bank in partnership with UNDP, UNOPS, IsDB, FAO, EU, UNESCO, and JICA, has been making strides to bolster its contribution to improve living conditions for the majority of Yemenis by building services projects that have had a profound impact in supporting livelihoods and service delivery

The Public Works Project Supports Farmers to Produce Food Locally and to Deal with Climate Change.

The Public Works Project (PWP) has demonstrated remarkable adaptability and resilience in addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by Yemen. By focusing on supporting local food production and mitigating the impacts of climate change, this initiative stands as a testament to the effectiveness and efficiency of donor-supported interventions in complex environments.

Transparency and Fairness of Distribution

The Public Works Project's interventions span across all regions of Yemen without exception. Projects are allocated to districts based on a severity of need index, which encompasses various criteria such as population, intensity of displacement, urgent priorities within the community, and food insecurity. This index was developed with data collected and regularly updated by United Nations agencies.

The project has effectively executed initiatives that significantly impact the daily lives of citizens, including water provision, school rehabilitation, road paving, sanitation services, and agricultural land protection.

These initiatives aim to supply essential services while employing the maximum number of skilled and unskilled labor, particularly in light of Yemen's current conditions. Despite the persistent challenges and the difficulty of accessing remote districts in Yemen, the Public Works Project has demonstrated resilience and adaptability, ensuring that its projects reach all governorates of Yemen without exception, which has been substantiated by actual implementation. It can be confidently stated that the activities of the Public Works Project have targeted all 22 governorates, encompassing 320 out of the total 333 districts of the Republic.

The Public Works Project: a Successful Partner for the Donor Community

Based on World Bank data, Yemen has experienced a significant 52% decline in real GDP per capita over the past seven years. This economic contraction has left approximately 21.6 million Yemenis, which constitutes two-thirds of the population, requiring urgent humanitarian aid.

The Economic, Social, and Environmental Impacts of the Social Protection Projects (SPECRP)

As a strategy pursued by PWP, the application of the principle of transparency aims at ensuring the sustainability of implemented subprojects and whether they meet the needs of the communities. An environmental, social, and economic impact assessment was carried out for the interventions that were completed during a period ranging from 3-6 months to measure whether they have had any impact in improving the living conditions of vulnerable communities and the level of food security and whether they addressed the negative impacts of climate change.
