The water crises is not unique to the city of Taiz. Most rural and mountainous districts in the Governorate suffer even more and have a dire need for water to cover minimum needs. There is an acute shortage of water sources, and when there is one, it is far away from the villages which are spread all over the mountains. To fetch the minimum needs of water, people require a lot of effort and time.
This normally falls under the responsibility of women and children, both males and females. They are the ones to suffer the hardship of searching for water and fetching it to their homes under harsh conditions. In addition to the family feuds - and these are widely spread in the villages and districts of Taiz - the water problem is a common one suffered by the majority of the people in the various districts of Taiz.
The Governorate of Taiz is the most affected by water shortages due to the lack of sustainable water resources. Many factors contribute to this problem; one of the main factors is that a vast swath of land is mountainous. Seasonal rainfall is short and scarce and there are no groundwater reservoirs - groundwater has been depleted due to the high extraction rate and the dense population in these areas.
