Built 35 years ago in 1982, Abi Dhar Al-Ghafari’s basic and secondary school is located in the lower Durainah village in the District of Abs of the Governorate of Hajjah. The school consist of two parts: one a model school building and another structure consisting of classrooms built randomly without roofs, sand floors and no WC’s.
PWP Transformed the Building into a School
The school principal, Ibrahim Essa said before the PWP intervention to renovate it, the school had no fence walls and all types of vehicles were passing right in front of the classrooms. He said noise pollution, which disturbed the learning process, was a major concern for the school management. In addition, the classrooms in the annex structure were built by the local residents, but weren’t completed and lacked WC’s for the students, he said.
The Situation is Now Better
With the intervention by PWP, the situation is now much better in the school which now has and enrollment of 960 males and females students. 365 of the students are IDP’s, out of whom 240 hail from the governorate of Sa’adah, and Haradh and Meedi in the governorate of Hajjah.
According to the principal of the school, the renovation of the school and annexes by PWP expanded the school and provided ample room for IDP’s. He said the construction of WC’s for the school was crucial to retain the secondary school female students in the classrooms. He also underlined the importance of building a fence wall to protect the students and the school building, because he said it was too noisy it resembled the local bazaar.
