Provision of water for residents and IDPs in the District of Jiblah – Governorate of Ibb – from a tank located in al-Mansoura needs a 20-30 days wait as per the distribution schedule. This has forced residents to try to meet their water needs for domestic use by buying water from water tankers – a matter that has aggravated the already stressed living conditions for both the residents and IDPs.
Demands for water in Jiblah increased due to rising population growth in the District. The District has become a hub for IDPs who have been displaced from the governorates of Taiz and al-Dhale'a by the current situation, effectively doubling water consumption as more people arrive in the area.
Increased Demands
The increasing demand for water stretched the wait time for a family's turn for water-delivery to their homes to 30 days. Abdulla Hunaish, a resident of the area, confirms that water demand is on the rise due to the increase arrivals of IDPs. This has put pressure on the existing water-supply and decreased the frequency of water-distribution to homes from 3 times a month to only once a month. Thus, families have resorted to buying water from water vendors to meet their needs increasing the financial burden on families at the expense of food and health expenditure.
Problem Solved
The PWP, in the course of its normal interventions to alleviate the hardship on residents and IDPs alike, made an intervention to provide clean water to the residents and IDPs in Jiblah. It implemented a new stone-built reservoir to augment the existing tank to address the problem of water shortage in the area. As a result, residents of the Jiblah District are now getting water deliveries once a week, compared with the month-long wait they had to make before the implementation of the subproject. Sadeq al-Odaini, a resident of the area, said the residents no longer need to buy water from water vendors - thanks to the PWP which made an effective contribution to alleviate the hardship, addressed the problem, and provided sufficient water supply for the people.
