Implemented by PWP: The Agricultural Land Protection Project in Wadi al-Hajjer, a Safety Valve for Farmers and the Land.

Self efforts by Hajj Nasser Eyadah weren’t successful in the protection of his land - located in the lower part of al-Hajjer Valley, in the district of Melah, Lahj.  Water-flow from the dam comes at such a high speed that makes it impossible to contain, leaving a devastating impact on the land. Hajj Nasser has been compelled to abandon the land to its fate. Losses far exceed returns. Resources are limited and farmers, like Eyadah, are unable to buy retainers and gabon nets to protect their land.

Hajj Nasser Eyadah’s problem is typical of problems faced by tens of farmers in the area, who have lost their land and their income. Farming is the only source of income for households in al-Hajjer area. Families have lost everything and are poor looking for anything to sustain their livelihoods.

Safety Valve

The implementation of the agricultural land protection project by PWP provided a safety valve in the protection of agricultural land from deterioration and erosion. According to Shayef Saif, the project will also protect the livelihoods of tens of farmers, bring stability to their lives, and saves them from joining the lists of the poor.

Increased Production

The project will protect the land and increase production by building irrigation channels. It’s expected that irrigated land will be greatly expanded. This means improvement of livelihoods for the households who will see their income increased as a result of reduction of losses caused by soil erosion and crop destruction.
