The public works project,pwp,is currently working on the preparation for commencing implementation of the yecrp additional funding. By june,2017,the pwp identified 349 subprojects to be implemented under the new funding. Estimated cost for these projects has been put at $24 million.
The pwp has been conducting field work to identify priorities and target areas in keeping with the project development objectives. 273 Subprojects are slated to be offered to local contractors in a tender to kick start the implementation effort at a cost of $19 million.
The public works project,pwp has succeed in leaving a tangible impact in local communities,especially amongst idp’s and impoverished families who are unable to sustain themselves.
The PWP is playing an active role in combating the Cholera outbreak in the country,especially in poor and areas of displacement. The PWP works to provide safe and clean water sources,builds public latrines,rehabilitation of the sanitation networks,and pavements of residential areas and neighborhoods to rid them of insects and epidemics.
Environment impact has been a main consideration in subprojects implemented by the public works project,pwp. Emphasis has been on tree planting as one of the main conditions set forth by the project implementation unit in the tenders documents. Additionally,the pwp field staff conduct field follow-up from the start to completion of a subproject to ensure that suitable trees have been planted according to specifications.
The public works project’s management puts major emphasis on women participation in the setting of priorities and project identification in target areas. This attention is reflected in the establishment of a gender unit in pwp’s headquarters.
Completed subprojects and those under implementation have been creating profound impacts on local communities. They have created stable conditions for IDPs and returnees. Important subprojects have contributed to improving the situation,such as improved sanitation- through subprojects for stone pavements of roads and streets,provision of clean water for human and livestock,and access to fully functional schools.
The Public Works Project together with the United National Development Programme, UNDP, signed last march the project document for the Yemen Emergency Response Project, YECRP. The project has received a 70 million US dollar funding from the World Bank and will be implemented within a period of 24 months.
PWP has achieved an A+ rating, the highest rating awarded by the third audit team (the Consultant) responsible for the follow-up and evaluation of the performance of PWP in the implementation of emergency response projects in Yemen. The project is funded by the World Bank in partnership with UNDP. The evaluation came following field visits to projects under implementation and completed projects.
